The rebooted Sex and the City series, And Just Like That, is filming in New York. Here’s everything you need to know, including who is replacing Kim Cattrall.
When we waved goodbye to the stylish foursome of Sex and the City , we admit we felt a little blue. That was the end, after so many years and countless sartorial moments? Say it isn’t so.
Rather, it was a brief interlude as our favourite city slickers went on to explore their and beyond. But now, they’re back — and better than ever, as they delve into life as fabulous 50-somethings.
The HBO revival series is titled And Just Like That, a 10-episode show following Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) as they traverse through the next chapter of their lives. From what we’ve heard so far, it covers divorce (but who?), the pandemic and Carrie pivoting from columnist to podcaster. Naturally.
“I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humour, and the beloved city that has always defined them,” Sarah Aubrey, the head of original content at HBO Max, said in a statement, per Deadline.
What’s exactly the plot of this series?
According to an HBO Max news release, the revival will follow Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda as “they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”
Sarah Jessica Parker has revealed that the coronavirus pandemic, and its effects, will be explored in the series.
“The [coronavirus pandemic will] obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in,” she previously revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“How has Covid-19 changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.”
Where’s Kim Cattrall in all of this?
Kim Cattrall has stated, frequently, that she will not be reprising her role as the iconic and hilarious Samantha Jones. It’s devastating for many reasons — who is going to deliver those hilarious one-liners we know and love?
Explaining the situation to TV Line, HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys says, “Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life…
“They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”
Are they thinking of *sharp intake of breath* replacing Kim Cattrall?
While SJP has insisted that New York will step in as the show’s “fifth character” when asked about who will replace Kim Cattrall, The Guardian had the scoop.
They reported that Nicole Ari Parker — known for starring in the acclaimed series Empire as well as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights — is billed to replace Cattrall in the reboot.
“Oh so fine. I’d sing along to ‘70s love songs with this trio deep into any night,” SJP recently captioned a photo of herself, Nixon, Davis and Parker locked in a group hug.
“I’ll see you ladies tomorrow!”
As per EW, Nicole will play Lisa Todd Wexley, Carrie’s new best friend. Described as “a Park Avenue mother of three,” she’ll be closely linked to the three fashionable friends.
How, though? We’re still waiting on those deets.
What about Big?
Have no fear — Chris North is back and reprising his role of Mr Big for And Just Like That.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Chris again on And Just Like That ,” the series’ executive producer Michael Patrick King said in a statement released on Wednesday. “How could we ever do a new chapter of the Sex And The City story without our Mr Big?”
However there could be trouble in paradise, as per a leaked script, suggesting that Carrie will have to get by without Big as they’re going through a bitter divorce battle.
What other characters are returning?
It’s been confirmed that Mario Cantone (Anthony), Willie Garson (Stanford), Julie Halston (Bitsy von Muffling), David Eigenberg (Steve) and Evan Handler (Harry) are all starring in the upcoming revival of Darren Star’s classic series.
What’s more, Natasha (Big’s ex-wife) is also rumoured to be returning for the show. Spotted by eagle-eyed fans shooting And Just Like That this summer — but we’re all wondering why she could be in the show? Dressed all in black, the rumour mill is pointing towards a funeral yet we don’t know who has passed away.
When does it start?
While there’s no official release date, Collider has reported that And Just Like That is slated for a fall release on HBOMax.
