Sir David Attenborough has joined Instagram, racking up over a million followers in the first day.
But the avid-adventurer has joined the social media app for one very important reason.
He’s assisted by colleagues Colin and Jamie, who worked with Attenborough on A Life On Our Planet, as the environmental campaigner shares important and instructive videos.
In the first of these videos Attenborough explained why he’s joined the app and what followers can expect.
“My name is David Attenborough,” he said. “I’ve been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years, but this is my first time on Instagram. And I’m making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me, because as we all know, the world is in trouble.
“Continents are on fire, glaciers are melting, coral reefs are dying, fish are disappearing from our oceans — the list goes on and on.”
Filmmakers Jonnie and Colin will also be sharing exclusive content and behind the scenes clips, while running the account.
They explained in the caption, “David Attenborough has spent a lifetime travelling, exploring the wild places of our planet and documenting the living world in all its variety and wonder.
“He’s also witnessed the damaged caused. Saving our planet is now a communications challenge. We know what to do, we just need the will.
“That’s why we want to share this message on Instagram. Because there is hope and together, we can inspire change.”
As many of us know, the environmental toll on our planet is increasing — with less than a decade until it becomes irreversible, according to scientists. With Sir David Attenborough, our education to looking after our planet can continue.
