Alice Dogruyol heads to the Croatian island of Hvar to stay in the five-star Maslina Resort in Stari Grad

If there was ever a bed with a view, it’s at the Maslina Resort. My super-king bed faces out to the shimmering Adriatic Sea, and the room feels like my own airy, light wellness studio with beautiful wooden floors and natural textures. This luxurious waterside haven is nestled in a tranquil bay near Stari Grad on the enchanting island of Hvar.

From the moment I arrived at Maslina Resort, slicing through the crystalline waters on a sleek speedboat worthy of James Bond, I knew this was going to be a stay to remember. The dramatic entrance set the tone for what was to come: effortless luxury, top-class hospitality, and a deep connection with nature.

Welcome to wellness

Stepping into the reception lobby felt like an exhale, a sense of tranquillity washing over me as I was enveloped by the elegant, earthy interiors. The use of natural stone and wood instantly created a harmony between the indoors and the lush surroundings. It was the kind of serene, wellness-infused ambiance that was effortlessly chic, grounded in nature, and imbued with a sense of mindful luxury. From the very first moment, I felt a deep sense of reconnection with nature, as if the resort itself had been designed to quiet the mind and soothe the soul.

I have wanted to visit Hvar for a long time, drawn by its historic towns and glamorous nightlife that have famously attracted a long list of royalty and A-list stars. Staying at Maslina Resort, however, revealed a more serene and soulful side of the island, where modern sustainable architecture harmoniously blends with the untouched beauty of the landscape. It felt like a well-guarded secret, a sanctuary where time slows, and the simple pleasures of life – sun-drenched mornings, fragrant gardens, and the lull of waves – become the most treasured luxuries.

Designed by the acclaimed Aalto architects from Split, Maslina Resort is a masterpiece of contemporary elegance. With 50 rooms, a pristine rocky beach front, an elegant pool, gourmet dining options, a rejuvenating spa, a vibrant kids’ club, and three exquisite villas surrounded by olive trees and pines, it is an escape for all the senses.

My room was a perfect blend of modern luxury and wellness-inspired design. The deep wooden bathtub in the bedroom added an unexpected touch of indulgence, a quiet invitation to slow down, soak, and truly embrace relaxation. The accommodation felt more like a private retreat than a hotel, with floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed the natural light to pour in and panoramic views of the sea that made waking up a dream.

One of the highlights of my stay was lounging by the pool. While smaller than sprawling resort pools, it was intimate and deeply comfortable, surrounded by lush greenery that provided the perfect blend of shade and sunshine. The gentle rustling of the trees in the warm breeze, the impeccable service and the sheer elegance of the setting made it feel like a hidden paradise.

Feeding the senses

One of the most remarkable aspects of Maslina Resort is its unwavering dedication to wellness, something I felt deeply during my stay. The on-site organic herb garden supplies the restaurant, bar and spa with fresh ingredients, while the carefully preserved olive trees pay homage to the land’s heritage. The serene and elegant Pharomatiq Spa is a sanctuary of wellness, exuding an exclusive VIP ambiance. One afternoon, I indulged in a full-body massage that left me feeling completely renewed. Mornings, however, were reserved for a different kind of rejuvenation. As I flowed through yoga poses in the stunning beachfront yoga shala, the salty sea breeze and the rhythmic sound of the waves created an almost meditative state, making it one of the most grounding and restorative yoga sessions I’ve ever experienced.

Dining at Maslina Resort is an exquisite experience, with Michelin-starred menus featuring the freshest Adriatic seafood and local ingredients, some of which are sourced directly from the resort’s own garden. The intimate dining spots scattered around the resort, including small jettys that offer private dining on the water, create magical moments.

A scenic 30-minute walk along the coast leads to the historic town of Stari Grad, and it is simply inspiring. Meandering through the labyrinth of cobbled streets, discovering hidden courtyards, and marvelling at centuries-old stone buildings felt like stepping into a living history book. The main square is a lively hub, lined with quaint cafés and family-run restaurants. One evening, we dined at Kod Barba Luke, a restaurant run by the Roić family since 1970, situated in the famous Hektorović city square. The fresh fish dinner, coupled with the ambiance of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, made for an unforgettable evening.

For those looking to explore further, a picturesque drive through the mountains led us to Hvar Town, and as we arrived, I was completely awestruck. The island’s beauty is almost impossible to put into words – jewel-toned waters, rugged cliffs, and a skyline of ancient stone buildings that make you feel as though you’ve stepped into a postcard. It’s hard to believe that such a paradise exists so close to home. Hvar Town itself was vibrant, sophisticated, and effortlessly beautiful, with a dazzling mix of history, culture, and cosmopolitan energy. The lively marina, the scent of lavender in the air, and the elegant waterfront cafés created a setting that felt like pure magic.

Eager to take in the full scope of this breathtaking island, we visited the iconic Fortica Fortress, perched high above the town. Standing there, with the warm breeze on my skin and the entire island stretching out before me, was a moment of pure wonder, and one that will stay with me long after I leave this incredible place.
