On Sunday, 10th of March, Hollywood A-Listers took to the red carpet to celebrate their achievements in film at the 96th annual Academy Awards. And while we enjoyed the ceremony itself, we must admit that all of our eyes were on the red carpet as we waited to see what the stars were wearing.

This year celebrities embraced sparkles, showing that sequins are truly the trend to watch. Commonly thought of as just for the festive season, this year there’s no need to put the sequins away for spring!

Other trends we noticed were the continuation of the ‘no necklace look’, which recently has people wondering if necklaces are going extinct altogether, and sheer heels.

We put together our favourite over-50s style wins from the big night, from understated glamour to bold and colourful looks. Scroll on to see our top picks.

Michelle Yeoh

Last year’s Best Actress winner — awarded for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once — Michelle Yeoh oozed Old Hollywood Glamour in custom Balenciaga, featuring silver sequins and full-length opera gloves.

Chang Li Hua and Yi Yan Fuei

Stars of documentary short Năi Nai & Wài Pó, Chang Li Hua and Yi Yan Fuei wore the most amazing printed suits (complete with matching walking stick) from the Los Angeles-based brand Rodarte, and were apparently heard calling ‘Grannies coming through!’ on the red carpet.

Rita Moreno

Rita Moreno, who presented at the ceremony, showed that you can still take risks and try something new even at 92, as she debuted a new hairstyle and a bold and flattering Badgley Mischka silhouette.

Laverne Cox

Red carpet host Laverne Cox wore vintage Mugler featuring a gold lamé bodice to interview the stars — we love the off-the-shoulder chiffon scarf.

Diane Warren

Diane Warren, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for her work on The Fire Inside (for the film Flamin’ Hot), wore the coolest sequin flames we’ve ever seen. Edgy, unique and not too serious, the singer stayed on-theme with the film she was nominated for.

Regina King

Actress Regina King brought a pop of colour to the carpet in bright orange custom Atelier Versace. We think the flowing lines of this dress are wonderful! She accessorised with sheer shoes — very on-trend.

Sandra Oh

The Killing Eve and Grey’s Anatomy star wore the most gorgeous sequins of varying sizes to the Vanity Fair Oscars Party in a floor-length Naeem Khan dress.

Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy bucked the monochrome trend and went all-out in fun fuchsia and bright red, in a rare appearance together with husband Ben Falcone. She accessorised with lots of jewellery and a red mirrored clutch.

Jodie Foster

Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Nyad, Jodie Foster appeared with her wife Alexandra Hedison in an understated navy-blue LOEWE gown, custom-made with subtle sparkles and scarf detail.

Annette Bening

Also nominated for Nyad, actress Annette Bening gave laid-back chic in a gorgeous sheer robe, complete with delicate embroidery, and a glittering navy jumpsuit.

With the Academy Awards over for another year, we wonder what stars and styles will grace the red carpet of the Dolby theatre again next year. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!
